Yungblud: un artiste complètement weird!

Mardi 8 décembre, c’est à travers une réunion Zoom que nous avons eu l’opportunité d’interviewer Dominic Harrison, alias Yungblud. Quatre jours après la sortie de son album weird!, le chanteur britannique se livre sur ce nouvel opus, sur ses collaborations, et sur ses engagements en tant qu’artiste.

Yungblud: Bonjour! Ça va? J’ai hâte de discuter avec vous!

Pozzo Live: Bonjour Dom! Merci beaucoup de prendre du temps pour nous. Comment vas-tu?

Yungblud: Je vais bien, je suis surexcité! Je suis putain de fatigué car je n’ai pas dormi depuis cinq jours parce que je signais plein de choses. Mais je vais bien, je me sens bien, je me sens weird!

Pozzo Live: On ne connait pas la situation en Angleterre. Est-ce que tu es confiné chez toi?

Yungblud: Non, à vrai dire on vient de sortir du confinement donc c’est bien. Je suis à la maison pour faire beaucoup de presse car la sortie de l’album, c’est quelque chose de dingue! C’est de la folie, l’album est partout, c’est incroyable!

Pozzo Live: C’est génial! On adore ce nouvel album chez Pozzo Live. Pour l’instant, tu as déjà sorti 5 clips. Est-ce que tu prévois d’en sortir d’autres? Si oui, est-ce qu’on peut avoir quelques indices?

Yungblud: Et bien, je tourne quelque chose samedi. Cela implique un américain. Des cheveux blonds, et des tatouages. On fait ça samedi, ça va être fou. Il y a quelque chose d’autre qui sort ce soir, il y a tellement des trucs à venir. On a tourné des vidéos live pour la plupart des morceaux de l’album, on a tourné des clips…Je suis mort !

Pozzo Live: On remarque que Lemonade, ton featuring avec Denzel Curry, n’est pas sur l’album. Est-ce qu’il a toujours fait partie d’un projet à part?

Yungblud: Oui, c’était un projet à part. Denzel et moi on s’est éclatés avec cette chanson. On l’a écrite il y a un moment. On ne savait pas trop ce qu’on voulait en faire. Et puis on nous a annoncé qu’on voulait le morceau pour la bande originale de Madden, et on s’est dit « Allez, sortons la maintenant! ». C’est ce qu’on a fait, et ça a été de la folie.

Pozzo Live: Sur le nouvel album, Superdeadfriends nous fait penser à la chanson Sabotage des Beastie Boys. Est-ce que ce groupe a eu une influence sur toi?

Yungblud: Oui! Je voulais écrire un album qui sonne comme une rencontre entre The Beastie Boys et The Happy Mondays, qui rencontrent The Stone Rouses et M.I.A. C’est vraiment que ce j’avais à l’esprit en écrivant ce morceau. Je voulais juste une chanson qui serait une putain d’ouverture pour les concerts!

Pozzo Live: Une entrée sur scène avec ce morceau, ça va être dingue!

Yungblud: Mec, ça va être putain de dangereux! Ça va être un truc de malade!

Pozzo Live: Sur cet album, il y a une nouvelle collaboration avec Machine Gun Kelly, avec la chanson acting like that. Vous avez déjà collaboré ensemble et vous êtes clairement de bons amis. Quand vous travaillez ensemble, est-ce vous réussissez à rester sérieux, ou bien est-ce que c’est désordre au bout de cinq minutes?

Yungblud: OUI! C’est comme ça que les meilleures musiques sont créées. On est meilleurs potes et on est complètement fous. Voyez les choses de cette chanson: s’il y a une fête organisée par Kells et moi, les gens sont forcément au courant, parce que la maison prend feu au bout de cinq minutes. C’est juste moi et mon meilleur pote, et Travis qui est notre idole à tous les deux. On fait les choses qu’on a envie de faire en studio et on adore ça.

Pozzo Live: D’ailleurs, on remarque le disque d’or de I Think I’m Okay encadré derrière toi…

Yungblud: Oui, je suis très fier de celui-là. Je ne sais jamais quoi faire de ces choses là, car je trouve ça un peu prétentieux de les afficher. Mais je suis fier de celui-ci. J’ai envoyé tous les autres à ma mère. Du coup, quand on rentre dans ses maison, il y en a partout sur les murs, on dirait que je suis mort !

Pozzo Live: En parlant de collaborations, nous sommes fans de Bring Me The Horizon, comme toi. On se demandait, pendant combien de nuits est ce que tu n’as pas dormi après qu’Oli t’ait appelé pour te demander de bosser avec eux sur OBEY? Tu devais être surexcité!

Yungblud: Oli a été une inspiration énorme pour moi. Je faisais la queue à ses concerts avant. Il m’a sauvé la vie. Il m’a appris ce que c’était de grandir dans le nord de l’Angleterre, il m’a appris que c’était ok d’être qui j’étais. Alors quand ton idole t’appelle en te disant: « Tu sais quoi? On adorerait faire une chanson avec toi », j’étais genre « Ouais, ok, je pars pour le studio! ».

Pozzo Live: Est-ce que tu as mis du temps à réaliser que c’était réel?

Yungblud: Oui, carrément. J’étais genre « Wahou, c’est vraiment fou! ».

Pozzo Live: On suppose que les garçons sont super sympas et que tu as du passer un bon moment avec eux.

Yungblud: Ils sont littéralement à 50 minutes de moi. Alors de faire ça ici, et de voir tout le monde kiffer ça à l’international, c’est dingue.
Les gars, si je baille par accident, ce n’est pas parce que je m’ennuie, c’est parce que je n’ai pas dormi! J’ai signé des vinyles toute la nuit. Donc si je baille, ce n’est pas par ennui, je m’éclate, c’est juste que je n’ai pas dormi depuis deux jours!

Pozzo Live: C’est ça la vie de rock star, ne pas dormir et être toujours à 100%!

Yungblud: Ouais, c’est le rock & roll, bébé !

Pozzo Live: Evidemment, comme nous tous, on suppose que les concerts te manquent…

Yungblud: TELLEMENT ! L’énergie me manque. Et les câlins me manquent aussi. J’ai juste envie de faire un câlin à quelqu’un, de les serrer dans mes bras, vous voyez ce que je veux dire.

Pozzo Live: On se demandait si tu as déjà des projets pour la tournée Life On Mars l’année prochaine? Est-ce qu’on peut s’attendre à un retour XXL de la superstar de Doncaster?

Yungblud: Ça va être de la folie. La prochaine tournée, ça sera presque deux ans d’hyperactivité que j’aurais emmagasinée. Une fois de plus, les salles de concerts vont prendre feu. Donc tous les gens qui viennent doivent s’assurer de venir avec un extincteur. Ou alors, que ceux qui veulent se joindre à moi apporter des allumettes !

Pozzo Live: En parlant des concerts, tu as dit que le contact avec les gens te manque. Il est évident que tu as une relation très forte avec ta communauté, et que tu es un soutien moral important pour eux, à travers tes paroles et ta présence. Est-ce que cela devient plus difficile de rester aussi proche de tes fans puisque tu deviens de plus en plus célèbre?

Yungblud: Pas vraiment, même si je sais que c’est ce qu’on pourrait croire sur le papier. On parle toujours de la métaphore de « ramener un concert de punk dans un stade ». Je crois que l’idée derrière tout ça c’est de faire que les gens soient vraiment ce qu’ils veulent être. Et plus il y a de monde, plus le message passe, parce que ça devient plus réel, et plus légitime. Et on ne peut pas s’empêcher de se pincer et de se dire « Punaise, regarde comme on est nombreux maintenant ! ». Pas moi en tant qu’artiste, mais nous en tant que communauté.

Pozzo Live: C’est vrai, plus il y a de monde, plus il y a d’impact. En aidant les gens de ta communauté à s’accepter grâce à tes paroles, et à tout ce que tu fais, tu t’es aussi accepté toi même. Est-ce qu’on peut dire que ta carrière t’a servi de thérapie et qu’elle t’a aidé?

Yungblud: Absolument. L’objectif de tout ça, c’était de trouver des gens, de se sentir à sa place. Et quand on se sent à sa place quelque part, on se dit « Putain, j’ai l’impression de respirer pour la première fois ».

Pozzo Live: C’est super d’apporter un tel message et d’aider les gens simplement en chantant et en étant toi-même, c’est ce qu’il y a de plus beau.

Yungblud: C’est le but. La musique c’est tout un programme. Je veux écrire de la musique pour une bonne raison.

Pozzo Live: C’est quelque chose que l’on ressent vraiment en écoutant tes chansons et tes paroles, mais qui prend encore plus de sens pendant tes concerts. Peu importe la taille du public, tu réussis à fédérer quelque chose qui réunit les gens.

Yungblud: C’est ça, l’objectif c’est de rassembler les gens pour une cause commune. Parce que oui, je m’habille comme un rock star, oui je ressemble à un rockeur, mais ça, c’est pour tout le monde. Yungblud, c’est tout le monde. Yungblud c’est chacun et chacune d’entre nous, quelle que soit notre taille, forme, couleur, sexualité, point de vue. On est ici ensemble parce qu’on en a besoin, parce qu’on le veut, et parce que c’est nécessaire si on veut se battre pour un futur et un monde meilleurs.

Pozzo Live: On a besoin de messages comme ça dans notre société actuelle, alors merci d’en parler.

Yungblud: Bien sûr. C’est ce que je veux être. Je veux être un artiste qui fait passer un message et qui a quelque chose à dire. Je m’en fiche d’écrire des chansons fades qui n’ont pas de sens. Quand les gens me regardent et me demandent « Mais, tu ne veux pas d’un succès commercial? », et moi je suis genre « Mais qu’est ce que ça signifie? ». Qu’est-ce que ça veut dire? Un succès commercial ce n’est rien, c’est quelque chose que tu affiches sur ton mur, dans un putain de cadre. Le plus important c’est d’être lié aux gens, et de les aider, et qu’ils m’aident en retour. C’est tout ce qui m’intéresse.

Pozzo Live: Sur un sujet plus joyeux, on a vu ce matin que tu as sorti la suite de ta bande dessinée. Comment a débuté ce projet? Est-ce que c’est quelque chose que tu fais depuis longtemps?

Yungblud: Ça, c’est le Dominic Harrison – Yungblud de cinq heures du matin, quand je m’ennuie parce que je viens de me réveiller et que je me dis « il faut que je fasse quelque chose, il faut que je fasse quelque chose! ». Je voulais construire un univers dans lequel les gens pourraient se retrouver.  La première BD a eu un succès fulgurant. Et je me suis dit « Cool, faisons une suite! ». Alors on l’a fait. Et voilà!

Pozzo Live: Nous avons une question très importante, peut-être la plus importante de l’interview! Quelle sera ta prochaine couleur de cheveux?

Yungblud: Pourquoi vous ne décideriez pas pour moi? Quelle couleur vous voulez?

Pozzo Live: Un arc-en-ciel! Un énorme arc-en-ciel sur tes cheveux!

Yungblud: Oh ouais, ça me va! Et je ferai peut-être des tâches léopard aussi!

Pozzo Live: Qui nous conseilles-tu d’interviewer la prochaine fois?

Yungblud: C’est une très bonne question. Je crois que vous devriez interviewer Jesse Rutherford de The Neighborhood. Chip Chrome est génial, j’adore, ce qu’il fait en ce moment, c’est très David Bowie. Ou Oli Sykes de Bring Me The Horizon, je lui envoie un texto maintenant si vous voulez! Faites ça, j’adorerais. Il pourra vous dire que je suis un con en studio!

Yungblud: Bonjour ! Ça va? Can’t fucking wait to talk to you!

Pozzo Live: Hi Dom! Thank you so much for taking some time for us!

Yungblud: Of course! Thank you for having MOI!

Pozzo Live: How are you doing?

Yungblud: I am good! I’m excited! I’m fucking tired I haven’t slept in five days ‘cause I’ve been signing all this shit! But I’m good, I’m feeling good, I’m feeling fucking weird!

Pozzo Live: We don’t know the situation in England… Are you stuck at home because of lockdown?

Yungblud: No we’ve actually just come out of the lockdown so that’s good. We’ve been in the house just doing press because the album just went mad. It’s crazy, it’s fucking everywhere which is wild!

Pozzo Live: It is, that’s awesome. It’s been just a few days but we really love the album so far. So far, you have released 5 music videos from the new album. Do you plan on releasing a few more? If so, can you give us any hint on what the next one will be?

Yungblud: Well I’m shooting something on Saturday! And it involves an American man, blond hair, and tattoos. We’re doing that on Saturday which will be mad. There’s something coming tonight, there’s so much coming. We’ve done live videos of most of the songs, we’ve done music videos. I’m dead.

Pozzo Live: We notice that Lemonade, your featuring with Denzel Curry, isn’t on the album… Was it always meant to be a side-project apart from the album?

Yungblud: Yeah it was a side project. Me and Denzel we just fucked with that song, we wrote it a while ago and then it got sick. We didn’t know what we wanted to do with it. And then the Madden soundtrack said “we want this”. And it was like “Fuck it, let’s release it now” and we did and it went crazy.

Pozzo Live: Talking about the songs and the album, Superdeadfriends reminds me of the song “Sabotage” by The Beastie Boys. Was it an influence for you?

Yungblud: Yeah I wanted to write a record that sounded like The Beastie Boys meets The Happy Mondays meets The Stone Roses meets M.I.A. I was very much into that mindset when writing it. I just wanted a song that would open the fucking show.

Pozzo Live: That’s going to be mental opening with this one.

Yungblud: Dude, that’ll be fucking dangerous! It’s gonna be sick!

Pozzo Live: On this album, there’s a new collaboration with your buddy Machine Gun Kelly, on the song “acting like that”. You guys have worked together before, you are obviously great friends. When you’re working together, do you manage to remain focused or do things turn into a huge mess after five minutes?

Yungblud: YES! That’s how the best music comes out! We’re just fucking best mates who go absolutely crazy. Put it this way: if there’s a party and me and Kells set it up, you know about it, ‘cause the house catches fire within about five minutes. It’s me and my best mate, with Travis who is an absolute idol to the both of us. We’re just making the shit we love to make in the studio and we love it.

Pozzo Live: Yeah we can notice the “I think I’m Okay” frame right behind you.

Yungblud: I’m very proud of that one. I never know where to put them up because they’re a bit fucking pretentious. But I’m proud of this one. I’ve sent them all home to my mom. So when you enter my mom’s house, there’s many of those on the wall, it’s like I’ve died.

Pozzo Live: Talking about collaborations, we are both huge fans of Bring Me The Horizon, just like you obviously. When Oli called you to work with them on OBEY…For how many nights did you not sleep because of excitement?

Yungblud: Oli was a massive inspiration to me. I used to line up outside his shows. He very much saved my life. He taught me about kind of growing up alternatively in the north of England, he taught me that it was alright to be who I was. So when your idol rings you up like “You know what? I’d love to do a song with you”, I was like “Yep, I’m on my way to the studio!”

Pozzo Live: Did it take some time for you to realize that this was happening, this was real?

Yungblud: Yeah, fuck yeah. I was like “Wow, it’s crazy”.

Pozzo Live: I guess the boys are really nice so it was a great moment just to be with them.

Yungblud: They’re literally like from fifty minutes away from me. To do that and see everyone fucking with it internationally is wild. Guys, if I by accident yawn, it’s not because I’m bored, it’s because I haven’t slept cause I’ve been signing vinyls all night. So if I yawn, it’s not because I’m bored, I’m having the best time, it’s just that I haven’t slept in two days.

Pozzo Live: That’s what rock stars should do, not sleep and always be at 100%.

Yungblud: Yeah it’s rock & roll baby!

Pozzo Live: Obviously, you must miss live music…

Yungblud: FUCK YES. I miss like the energy. And I miss cuddles. I just wanna cuddle someone, hold them nice and warm, you know what I mean.

Pozzo Live: We wanted to know if you already have plans for your Life On Mars tour next year? Can we expect a massive return of Doncaster’s superstar?

Yungblud: It’s gonna be fucking mental. This next tour is gonna be nearly two years of bottled-up ADHD. Again, the venues are gonna burn down. So everyone needs to make sure they bring a fire extinguisher. Or if you wanna join me, some fucking matches.

Pozzo Live: Talking about live shows, you said you miss contact, you miss cuddles. You obviously have a strong relationship to your community, I think you have been a strong moral support for your community, through your lyrics and your presence. Is it becoming difficult to keep this closeness with your fans as you become more and more famous?

Yungblud: Not really. I know in facts it might seem so but we always talk about the metaphor “let’s bring a punk club show to an arena”. I just think the idea about this whole thing is to make people feel like they’re exactly who they are. And the bigger this gets, the more powerful the feeling gets, because it becomes more real and more valid. And we can’t stop pinching ourselves because we’re like “holy fuck, look how big we are now”. Not me as an artist, but as a community.

Pozzo Live: It’s true, the bigger it is, the bigger impact it has. By helping your community to accept themselves with your lyrics and all the stuff you’re doing, you also accepted yourself for who you are. Can we say that your career was kind of a therapy for you and that it helped you too?

Yungblud: Absolutely. This whole thing was about finding people and finding a place to belong. And when you find a place to belong, you go “holy fuck, it’s like I’ve got lungs for the first time”.  

Pozzo Live: It’s great to bring messages and help people just by singing and being who you are, it’s the most beautiful thing.

Yungblud: That’s the point. Music can have such an agenda right now. I wanna write music for a reason.

Pozzo Live: It’s something that we can really feeling by listening to your songs and to your lyrics, but it’s something that takes so much sense live during your shows. You can feel the audience, no matter how big it is, you just manage to federate one big thing that ties people together.

Yungblud: That’s it, it’s just about bringing people together for one mutual cause. Because yes I dress like a rock star, yeah I look like a rock musician, but it’s about everyone. Yungblud is everyone. Yungblud is each and every one of us no matter what size, shape, color, sexuality, point of view. We are here together because we need to be and we want to be and we have to be to fight for a fucking better future and a better world.

Pozzo Live: We need messages like this in our actual society so thank you for bringing it up.

Yungblud: Always. That’s who I wanna be. I wanna be an artist of message and saying something. I couldn’t give a fuck about writing vapid songs that mean nothing. When people look at me like “but do you not want commercial success?” and I’m like “what does that even mean?” What the fuck does that even mean? It’s nothing, it’s something you hang on your wall, in a fucking picture frame. What means more to me is being connected and helping people and them helping me in return. It’s all I give a fuck about.

Pozzo Live: On a funnier subject, we saw this morning that you released the sequel to your comic book. How did this project start? Is this something you’ve been doing for a long time?

Yungblud: This is the 5am Dominic Harrison Yungblud in the morning when I’m bored because I woke up and I’m like “I need to do something, I need to do something!” I wanted to build a world people could fall into. The first comic went absolutely catapulted. And I was like “Cool, let’s write a follow-up”. So we did, and here we go!

Pozzo Live: I have a very important question, maybe the most important of the interview! Which color will you dye your hair next?

Yungblud: Why don’t you decide for me? What color do you want?

Pozzo Live: A rainbow! Like a huge rainbow on your hair!

Yungblud: Oh, yeah, I’m down, let’s go! And I might do leopard prints as well!

Pozzo Live: We have a signature question at Pozzo Live that we ask everyone. Who do you think we should interview next?

Yungblud: That is a great question. I think you should interview Jesse Rutherford from The Neighborhood. Chip Chrome is insane, I love what he’s doing right now, it looks very Bowie. Or Oli Sykes from Bring Me The Horizon, I’ll text him right now if you want! Do that, I would love it! You can talk about how much of a dickhead I am when I am in the studio!
