Paris a eu droit à une soirée spectaculaire de metal progressif le 27 mai au Backstage by the Mill, avec des performances de Four Stroke Baron, The Hirsch Effekt et les têtes d’affiche Caligula’s Horse.

Four Stroke Baron
La soirée a commencé avec le trio énigmatique Four Stroke Baron. Renommés pour ses sons futuristes et ses déformations vocales distinctives, ils ont immédiatement captivé l’attention avec leur style intrigant. D’abord perplexe, le public a fini par se laisser séduire par leur musique, un mélange de rock électronique et progressif, et leur approche novatrice. Leurs paysages sonores uniques ont offert un début de concert rafraîchissant.
The Hirsch Effekt
Ensuite, c’est au tour de The Hirsch Effekt, un groupe allemand qui donne son premier concert en France. Leur set a été électrisant ! Dès la première chanson, « Agnosie« , ils débordent d’énergie, parfaitement en accord avec leurs compositions complexes et proggy.
Le bassiste et le guitariste se partagent les parties vocales, alternant ou chantant en chœur, comme sur « Inukshuk« , une chanson que j’ai particulièrement apprécié, ajoutant ainsi des couches de profondeur à leur performance. Le batteur, lui, déploie une énergie au point qu’on se demande comment son kit survit.
Leur set constitue une transition idéale, préparant parfaitement le terrain pour les têtes d’affiche.
Caligula’s Horse
Les fans attendent patiemment que Caligula’s Horse monte sur scène. L’excitation monte, d’autant plus que leur dernier concert à Paris remonte déjà à six ans. Ils commencent avec « The World Breathes with Me » et « Golem » de leur dernier album, « Charcoal Grace« , sorti plus tôt cette année. Après « Golem« , Jim Grey, le chanteur, plaisante sur la météo et explique comment les Australiens commentent aléatoirement sur le temps, ce qu’il vient de faire avec le batteur, Josh Griffin, à cause de la chaleur dans la salle.
Un voyage dans le temps
Jim annonce ensuite que ce concert sera un set thématique, probablement l’un de leurs préférés à jouer jusqu’à présent. Il nous invite à voyager dans le passé jusqu’en 2015, année de sortie de leur album « Bloom » et de la chanson éponyme. S’ensuit « Marigold« , puis retour dans la machine à remonter le temps pour aller en 2017, l’année de la sortie de leur album « In Contact« . Ils commencent avec « Dream the Dead« , qui fait se réjouir la foule.
Après une brève pause, Jim nous apprend des bruits australiens, notamment le soupir court que l’on est censé faire avant de dire à la personne à côté que « il fait chaud aujourd’hui ». Nous sommes prêts pour notre prochain voyage en Australie, merci Jim ! Nous continuons avec « The Hands of the Hardest Heart« , chanson qu’ils n’ont pas jouée en live depuis sept ans avant cette tournée.
Une année mémorable
Il est temps de retourner dans la machine à remonter le temps pour arriver en 2020, une année que nous nous rappelons tous trop bien, mais apparemment pour des raisons différentes. Les réactions du public sont mitigées, certains huent tandis que d’autres applaudissent avec enthousiasme. Finalement, tout le monde s’accorde à dire que la sortie de « Rise Radiant » est l’une des meilleures choses qui soit arrivée cette année-là. C’est aussi l’année où leur bassiste, Dale Prinsse, a officiellement rejoint le groupe. C’est à ce moment précis que Dale décide de mordre dans un citron, les raisons de cette action restent floues. Des gens dans le public crient même « POURQUOI ? », mais au moins, c’est très divertissant.
C’est le moment de « The Tempest » et « Slow Violence » sans interruption entre les deux. Le public donne tout ce qu’il a et le groupe répond en retour, chacun se nourrissant de l’énergie de l’autre. Jim annonce même que c’est le public le plus déchaîné de la tournée, un moment de fierté pour nous.
Dernière escale
Jim nous demande ensuite si ça nous dérangerait de chanter ensemble, ce à quoi la foule répond unanimement par l’affirmative. Il nous fait chanter la ligne « It’s your ocean rise », que le public réussit parfaitement dès le premier essai. Jim déclare alors : « Fuck it, forget anything I was going to say it’s perfect let’s play the song ». Sans surprise à ce stade, ils commencent à jouer « Oceanrise » et le public chante la ligne apprise parfaitement.
Nous remontons encore une fois dans la machine à remonter le temps, jusqu’en 2024, pour revenir à leur dernière sortie avec « The Stormchaser » et la magnifique « Mute« , qu’ils annoncent comme leur dernière chanson du set.
La fin du voyage
Mais le public n’en a pas fini avec eux, il commence à scander pour un rappel. Après une courte pause, le groupe revient et Jim partage son amour pour ce petit moment de jeu où nous savons tous qu’ils reviendront, ils savent que nous savons, mais nous jouons tous notre rôle dans cet acte. Avant de continuer, Jim rend un dernier hommage à Sam Vallen, leur guitariste, qu’il décrit comme l’esprit créatif derrière le groupe. Il retourne ensuite dans les souvenirs, partageant avec nous l’histoire de la création du groupe il y a des années.
Il annonce alors qu’ils ont une dernière chanson (pour de vrai cette fois), mais la foule proteste et demande deux chansons supplémentaires. Jim s’arrête, les regarde avant de dire : « Je sais que vous, les Français, aimez votre démocratie, mais ce n’en est pas une », ce qui fait rire tout le monde. Dans cette ambiance de bonne humeur, ils concluent le set avec « Daughter of the Mountain » avant de dire enfin au revoir.
Nous avons passé près de deux heures avec Caligula’s Horse, mais elles sont passées beaucoup trop vite. Cependant, nous gardons les souvenirs de ce soir dans une capsule temporelle, en attendant de les rouvrir lors de leur prochaine visite dans la capitale.

Four Stroke Baron
The evening started with the enigmatic trio Four Stroke Baron. Renowned for their futuristic sounds and distinctive vocal distortions, they immediately captured attention with their intriguing style. Initially perplexed, the audience eventually succumbed to their music, a blend of electronic and progressive rock, and their innovative approach. Their unique soundscapes provided a refreshing start to the concert.
The Hirsch Effekt
Next up is The Hirsch Effekt, a German band giving their first concert in France. Their set was electrifying! From the first song, « Agnosie« , they overflowed with energy, perfectly in line with their complex and proggy compositions.
The bassist and guitarist share vocal duties, alternating or singing in harmony, as on « Inukshuk« , a song I particularly liked, adding layers of depth to their performance. The drummer, meanwhile, exudes so much energy that one wonders how his kit survives.
Their set serves as an ideal transition, perfectly setting the stage for the headliners.
Caligula’s Horse
Fans are eagerly waiting for Caligula’s Horse to take the stage. Excitement is building, especially since their last concert in Paris was six years ago. They kick off with « The World Breathes with Me » and « Golem » from their latest album, « Charcoal Grace ». The latest was released earlier this year. After « Golem« , Jim Grey, the singer, jokes about the weather. He explains how Australians randomly comment on it, as he just did with drummer Josh Griffin, due to the heat in the venue.
A Journey Through Time
Jim then announces that this concert will be a themed set, probably one of their favorites to play so far. He invites us to travel back to 2015, the year their album « Bloom » was released, along with the title track. This is followed by « Marigold« , before jumping back in the time machine to 2017, the year of the release of their album « In Contact« . They kick off with « Dream the Dead« , which gets the crowd cheering.
After a brief pause, Jim teaches us some Australian noises, including the short sigh one is supposed to make before telling the person next to them, « it’s hot today ». We’re ready for our next journey to Australia, thanks Jim! We continue with « The Hands of the Hardest Heart« , a song they haven’t played live in seven years before this tour.
A Memorable Year
It’s time to return to the time machine to arrive in 2020, a year we all remember too well, but apparently for different reasons. The crowd’s reactions are mixed, with some booing while others applaud enthusiastically. Eventually, everyone agrees that the release of « Rise Radiant » was one of the best things to happen that year. It’s also the year their bassist, Dale Prinsse, officially joined the band. It’s at this precise moment that Dale decides to bite into a lemon, the reasons for which remain unclear. People in the crowd even shout « WHY? », but at least it’s very entertaining.
It’s time for « The Tempest » and « Slow Violence » with no interruption between the two. The crowd gives it their all, and the band reciprocates, feeding off each other’s energy. Jim even announces that this is the rowdiest crowd of the tour, a moment of pride for us.
Final Stop
Jim then asks us if we would mind singing together, to which the crowd unanimously responds in the affirmative. He has us sing the line « It’s your ocean rise », which the crowd nails perfectly on the first try. Jim then declares, « Fuck it, forget anything I was going to say, it’s perfect let’s play the song ». Not surprisingly at this point, they start playing « Oceanrise« , and the crowd sings the learned line perfectly.
We go back in the time machine one more time, all the way to 2024, to return to their latest release with « The Stormchaser » and the beautiful « Mute« , which they announce as their last song of the set.
The End of the Journey
But the crowd isn’t done with them yet; they start chanting for an encore. After a short break, the band returns, and Jim shares his appreciation for this little pretend moment where we all know they’ll come back, they know that we know, but we’re all playing our part in this act. Before continuing, Jim gives a final shoutout to Sam Vallen, their guitarist, whom he describes as the creative mind behind the band. He then goes back into memories, sharing with us the story of how the band was created years ago.
He then announces that they have one last song (for real this time). But the crowd protests and asks for two more songs. Jim stops, looks at them before saying, « I know you French people love your democracy, but this isn’t one », which makes everyone laugh. In this good mood, they conclude the set with « Daughter of the Mountain » before finally saying goodbye.
We spent nearly two hours with Caligula’s Horse, but they went by way too quickly. However, we’re keeping the memories of tonight in a time capsule, waiting to reopen it the next time they visit the capital.
